เส้นทางของคอสตูมดีไซน์เนอร์—จากอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ สู่การวิจัย และก้าวต่อไปด้วย AI

สวัสดีครับ
สำหรับเพื่อน ๆ ที่เพิ่งเริ่มติดตามเพจนี้ อาจจะสงสัยว่า...
ใครคือแอดมินของเพจ? แล้วทำไมถึงหลงใหลในแฟชั่นย้อนยุคหรือแฟชั่นในประวัติศาสตร์นัก?

คำตอบง่ายมากครับ—ผมเชื่อว่าเสื้อผ้าไม่ได้เป็นแค่สิ่งที่เราสวมใส่ แต่เป็นเรื่องของ วัฒนธรรม อัตลักษณ์ และ เรื่องเล่า ที่ถูกถักทอไว้ในทุกตะเข็บผ้า
และในโลกยุคใหม่ที่ AI กำลังเปลี่ยนแปลงวิธีที่เราศึกษาและเข้าใจอดีต ผมจึงเลือกใช้ AI เป็นเครื่องมือในการ อนุรักษ์และจินตนาการภาพแฟชั่นไทยในอดีตขึ้นมาใหม่ ด้วยความเคารพ

หลายคนอาจจะตั้งคำถามว่า...
AI สร้างภาพแฟชั่นไทยในประวัติศาสตร์ได้จริงเหรอ?
คำตอบคือ—ทำได้ครับ แต่ไม่ใช่แค่กดปุ่มเดียวแล้วจะได้ผลลัพธ์ที่ถูกต้องทันที

ถึงแม้จะมีเอ็นจินทรงพลังอย่าง Google Imagen ที่สามารถสร้างภาพที่ "ดูเหมือนไทย" ได้ในระดับหนึ่ง
แต่ภาพที่ได้ก็มักจะเต็มไปด้วยข้อผิดพลาด—โครงร่างผิดยุค ผ้าผิดภาค หรือบางครั้งเจนชุดไทยเรือนต้น แต่ได้กระโปรงแบบ A Line แบบตะวันตกแทนผ้าซิ่น 😅
เพราะ AI พวกนี้ไม่ได้ "เข้าใจ" วัฒนธรรมไทยจริง ๆ มันเพียงแค่ “เดา” จากข้อมูลทั่วโลกที่ถูกป้อนเข้าไปเท่านั้น

แล้วทำไมภาพของผมจึง แม่นยำและถูกต้องตามบริบททางประวัติศาสตร์ มากกว่า?
ก็เพราะผมใช้ ระบบ AI แบบเปิด (open-source) และฝึกฝนโมเดลด้วยตนเองจาก หลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์จริง
ผมคัดเลือกภาพถ่ายต้นฉบับอย่างระมัดระวัง แบ่งตามยุคสมัย ใส่คำอธิบายภาพอย่างละเอียด และนำไปฝึกโมเดล LoRA ด้วยตนเอง

กระบวนการนี้ต้องอาศัยทั้ง ประสบการณ์ในสายอาชีพจริง และ ความรู้ทางวิชาการ ควบคู่กันไปครับ

ในสายอาชีพจริงของผม—
ผมเป็น Emmy-nominated Costume Designer (ผู้ออกแบบเครื่องแต่งกายที่เคยเข้าชิงรางวัลเอ็มมี) ทำงานอยู่ที่ลอนดอน
มีความเชี่ยวชาญในด้านแฟชั่นย้อนยุค โดยเฉพาะเสื้อผ้าไทยในมุมมองของโลกตะวันตกในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์

ผมจบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาโทด้าน History of Dress, Asian Design and Material Culture จาก Royal College of Artที่ลอนดอน
โดยได้รับทุนวิจัยด้านประวัติศาสตร์แฟชั่นจาก The V&A Museum
งานวิจัยของผมเน้นเรื่อง แฟชั่นและการเมืองในช่วงยุคล่าอาณานิคมในสยาม พม่า และญี่ปุ่น โดยนำความรู้จากประสบการณ์การทำงานในอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์กว่า 25 ปี มาผสมผสานกับการศึกษาทางทฤษฎี

นอกจากนี้ ผมยังเคยศึกษาวิจัยระดับปริญญาเอกที่มหาวิทยาลัย SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) ในลอนดอน
ในสาขา ประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะ โดยเน้นเรื่อง ประวัติศาสตร์การถ่ายภาพยุคแรกในสยาม และ ประวัติศาสตร์เครื่องแต่งกายในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
แต่หลังจากทำวิจัยมาได้หนึ่งปี ผมก็พบว่า—
ผมสามารถมีส่วนร่วมในวงวิชาการได้ โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องถือปริญญาเอก
เพราะผมมีเส้นทางอาชีพชัดเจนอยู่แล้วในอุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ การเรียนต่อระดับ PhD จึงไม่ได้สร้างเส้นทางใหม่ให้ผม
อย่างไรก็ตาม วิธีวิทยาในการวิจัย (research methodology) และแนวทางการคิดเชิงวิพากษ์ที่ได้เรียนรู้มา ยังคงอยู่กับผม และผมนำมาใช้ในการค้นคว้าและสร้างผลงาน AI อยู่เสมอ

การผสมผสานระหว่างการออกแบบจริงในอุตสาหกรรม การศึกษาทางวิชาการ และการทดลองกับเทคโนโลยี AI
จึงเป็นพื้นฐานของผลงานในเพจนี้
ที่พยายามนำเสนอภาพที่ทั้ง สวยงาม น่าเชื่อถือ และถูกต้องตามประวัติศาสตร์

อาจมีคนถามว่า แล้วถ้าย้อนไปไกลกว่าสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ล่ะ?
ต้องขอบอกตามตรงว่า—ผมไม่ได้เชี่ยวชาญครับ
เพราะข้อมูลที่ใช้ฝึก AI ส่วนใหญ่มาจาก "ภาพถ่ายต้นฉบับ" ซึ่งเพิ่งเริ่มมีในสยามช่วงปลายรัชกาลที่ ๓ เท่านั้น
ผมจึงเน้นเฉพาะช่วง "ต้นรัตนโกสินทร์ถึงปัจจุบัน" ที่สามารถอ้างอิงกับภาพถ่ายและข้อมูลจริงได้

A Costume Designer’s Journey – From Film to Research, and Forward with AI

Hello and welcome!
For those of you who’ve just started following this page, you might be wondering—
Who’s behind this account? And why am I so passionate about historical fashion and period styles?

The answer is simple: I believe clothing is more than what we wear. It’s about culture, identity, and storytelling stitched into every seam.
And in today’s world, where AI is reshaping how we interact with history and design, I’ve chosen to use AI as a tool to preserve and reimagine Thai fashion from the past.

Some of you may be asking:
Can AI really create accurate images of historical Thai fashion?
The answer is—yes, it can, but not with a single click of a button.

Even powerful engines like Google Imagen can generate images that "look" Thai—but only at a glance.
The results are often full of errors: wrong silhouettes, mismatched eras, or images that combine Lanna textiles with Khmer architecture 😅
That’s because these AIs don’t truly understand Thai culture—they’re just guessing based on global data.

So why are my AI-generated images more accurate and contextually correct?
Because I use open-source AI tools and train my own models using real historical references.
I carefully curate original photographs, organise them by period, label each detail, and fine-tune LoRA models myself.

This process requires both practical industry experience and academic expertise—
And that’s where my professional background comes in.

I’m an Emmy-nominated Costume Designer based in London, specialising in period fashion—particularly Thai dress as seen through the lens of the Western world during the Rattanakosin era.
I also hold a Master’s degree in History of Dress, Asian Design and Material Culture from the Royal College of Art, where I was awarded a scholarship by the V&A Museum.
My academic research focused on fashion and politics during the colonial period in Siam, Burma, and Japan, drawing from both historical study and over 25 years of experience in the film industry.

In addition to my MA, I also pursued PhD research at SOAS in the history of art, specialising in early photography in Siam and the history of dress in Southeast Asia.
But after a year of research, I came to an important realisation: I could still contribute academically without holding a PhD.
I had already built a meaningful career in the film industry, and pursuing a doctorate wouldn't create a new path—it would only run parallel to the one I already had.
That said, the research methodology and critical approach I developed during my doctoral work remain with me, and I continue to apply them in both my fashion history research and AI-generated projects today.

This fusion of hands-on costume design, academic training, and AI exploration forms the foundation of my work.
It allows me to create images that are not only visually compelling but also historically and culturally accurate.

You might wonder—what about fashion from before the Rattanakosin period?
To be honest, I don’t specialise in that era. Most of my datasets are based on original photography, which only became available in Siam during the late reign of King Rama III.
So my work focuses strictly on early Rattanakosin to the present day, where visual records can be verified.

This post is just an introduction.
In the next one, I’ll share more about my experience studying at the Royal College of Art, and how I’ve integrated AI into my work to explore Thai culture in ways that are both innovative and respectful.
