Prince Vajiravudh in London: A Historical Portrait from the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria

• On the left: the Ratchadaphisek Mala (เหรียญรัชดาภิเษกมาลา) R.S. ๑๑๒ (1893) — a commemorative medal of the Rattanakosin Ratchadaphisek (sixtieth anniversary) of King Chulalongkorn’s reign, issued in the same year as the Franco-Siamese diplomatic and military crisis (R.S. ๑๑๒) that resulted in territorial losses to France.

• On the right: the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medal — a British commemorative medal instituted in 1897and awarded to members of royal families, dignitaries, and military representatives who participated in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

At the time Prince Vajiravudh was studying in England, his elder half-brother, Crown Prince Vajirunhis (สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิราวุธ), had already died of illness in 1895 at age 16. After that, Vajiravudh was named heir apparent and continued his education abroad.

Later in life, Vajiravudh succeeded his father King Chulalongkorn (พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว) as King of Siam (พระมหากษัตริย์สยาม) from 1910 until his death in 1925 and is remembered for promoting nationalism, modernising education, and founding Chulalongkorn University.
