เจ้าพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์เป็นพระราชนัดดาที่ทรงพระเมตตาเป็นพิเศษ จึงทรงเรียกว่า “หลาน” อยู่เสมอ จนกลายเป็นชื่อที่ใช้เรียกกันตลอดชีวิต ได้ถวายตัวเข้ารับราชการในรัชกาลที่ ๔ ครั้นถึงรัชกาลที่ ๕ ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เป็นนายกวดมหาดเล็กหุ้มแพร แล้วเป็นนายจ่ายง ต่อมาเป็นหลวงเดชนายเวร ภายหลังเป็นเจ้าหมื่นสรรเพธภักดี แล้วเลื่อนเป็นพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์ จางวางมหาดเล็ก ครั้นถึง พ.ศ. ๒๔๔๓ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ สถาปนาเป็นเจ้าพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์ และถึงแก่อสัญกรรมเมื่อวันที่ ๑ มกราคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๕
เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๔ (ค.ศ. ๑๘๙๑) สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ เสด็จประพาสลิวาเดีย (ไครเมีย) พร้อมกับเจ้าพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์ และได้เข้าเฝ้าพระเจ้าอเล็กซานเดอร์ที่ ๓ จักรพรรดิรัสเซีย โดยเจ้าพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์ได้รับพระราชทานเครื่องราชอิสริยาภรณ์นักบุญอันนา ชั้นที่ ๒

Chao Phraya Thewet Wongwiwat, originally Mom Rajawongse Lan Kunchon (หม่อมราชวงศ์หลาน กุญชร), was the son of Prince Singhanat Rajadurongrit (พระองค์เจ้าสิงหนาทราชดุรงคฤทธิ์), a son of Krom Phra Phithak Thewet (กรมพระพิทักษ์เทเวศร์), and Mom Sut (หม่อมสุด), daughter of Khun Phat (Thong) (ขุนพัฒน์ (ทอง)). He was born on 18 November 1852.
He was a royal grandson especially favoured by the King, who always called him “Lan” (หลาน), meaning “grandson”. In time, this became the name by which he was known throughout his life. He entered royal service during the reign of King Mongkut (พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว, Rama IV). In the reign of King Chulalongkorn (พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว, Rama V), he was appointed Nai Kuat Mahat Lek Hum Phrae (นายกวดมหาดเล็กหุ้มแพร), then Nai Chang (นายจ่ายง), and later Luang Det Naiwen (หลวงเดชนายเวร). He was subsequently promoted to Chao Muen Sanphetphakdi (เจ้าหมื่นสรรเพธภักดี), and later to Phraya Thewet Wongwiwat (พระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์), serving as Chief of the Royal Pages (จางวางมหาดเล็ก). In B.E. 2443, King Chulalongkorn (พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว) further elevated him to the rank of Chao Phraya Thewet Wongwiwat (เจ้าพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์). He later passed away on 1 January B.E. 2465, as given in the original Thai text.
In B.E. 2434 (1891), Prince Damrong Rajanubhab (สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ) travelled to Livadia, Crimea, accompanied by Chao Phraya Thewet Wongwiwat (เจ้าพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์), and was granted an audience with Emperor Alexander III of Russia (พระเจ้าอเล็กซานเดอร์ที่ ๓ จักรพรรดิรัสเซีย). On that occasion, Chao Phraya Thewet Wongwiwat received the Order of Saint Anna, 2nd Class.
This portrait is especially fascinating because Chao Phraya Thewet Wongwiwat (เจ้าพระยาเทเวศร์วงศ์วิวัฒน์) is shown wearing entirely foreign decorations.
