กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน พระนามเดิม พระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ พระองค์เจ้าบุรฉัตรไชยากร (๒๓ มกราคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๒๕ – ๑๔ กันยายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๙) เป็นพระราชโอรสในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวกับเจ้าจอมมารดาวาด ดำรงตำแหน่งองคมนตรี แม่ทัพภาคที่ ๑ พระองค์แรก จเรทหารช่าง ผู้บัญชาการกรมรถไฟหลวง และเสนาบดีกระทรวงพาณิชย์และคมนาคม ทั้งยังทรงริเริ่มการค้นหาปิโตรเลียมในประเทศสยาม และทรงเป็นต้น “ราชสกุลฉัตรชัย”
เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดให้ยุบรวมกระทรวงพาณิชย์และกระทรวงคมนาคม จึงโปรดให้กรมหลวงกำแพงเพชรฯ รับตำแหน่งผู้รั้งเสนาบดีกระทรวงคมนาคมและพาณิชยการ ตั้งแต่วันที่ ๒๓ มีนาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๘ จนถึงวันที่ ๑๔ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๙ จึงทรงตั้งเป็นเสนาบดีกระทรวงพาณิชย์และคมนาคม และทำการในตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการรถไฟหลวงแห่งกรุงสยามด้วย ต่อมา วันที่ ๘ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๒ โปรดให้เลื่อนเป็น พระเจ้าพี่ยาเธอ กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน ประชาธิบดินทรเจษฎภาดา ปิยมหาราชวงศ์วิศิษฎ์ อเนกยนตรวิจิตรกฤตยโกศล วิมลรัตนมหาโยธาธิบดี ราชธุรันธรีมโหฬาร พาณิชยการคมนาคม อุดมรัตนตรัยสรณธาดา มัททวเมตตาชวาศรัย ฉัตรชัยดิลกบพิตร ทรงศักดินา ๑๕,๐๐๐ และได้รับโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นอภิรัฐมนตรีในวันที่ ๒๑ ตุลาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๔ ทรงเป็นองคมนตรีในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๗ จนถึงปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๕
พระกรณียกิจด้านการรถไฟและการคมนาคม
พระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน ทรงบุกเบิกกิจการรถไฟสยาม โดยดำรงตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการกรมรถไฟหลวงหลังการรวมกิจการรถไฟสายเหนือและสายใต้ ทรงขยายเส้นทางรถไฟทุกภูมิภาค และในปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๑ โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สั่งซื้อรถจักรดีเซลคันแรกของเอเชียมาใช้แทนรถจักรไอน้ำ นอกจากนี้ ยังทรงรับผิดชอบงานด้านทางหลวงและสะพาน เช่น สะพานกษัตริย์ศึก สะพานรัษฎาภิเศก และสะพานพระราม ๖ รวมถึงทรงริเริ่มการสำรวจปิโตรเลียมที่อำเภอฝาง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ อันนับเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการค้นหาพลังงานในประเทศ

ทรงเป็นผู้ริเริ่มการสื่อสารสมัยใหม่ในสยาม โปรดให้ติดตั้งเครื่องส่งวิทยุกระจายเสียงและเปิด “สถานีวิทยุกรุงเทพฯ ที่พญาไท” เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๓ อีกทั้งทรงผลักดันแนวคิดการแพร่ภาพโทรทัศน์ แม้มิได้เกิดขึ้นจริงจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๕ ทรงขยายกิจการไปรษณีย์ โทรเลข และโทรศัพท์ทั่วประเทศ รวมทั้งทรงสนพระทัยการบิน ทรงทดลองขับเครื่องบินและวางรากฐานการบินพาณิชย์ของไทย
ด้านอื่น ๆ
ต่อมา พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๙ ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเสนาบดีกระทรวงพาณิชย์และคมนาคม และเป็นนายกสภาเผยแผ่พาณิชย์ อีกทั้งยังเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งสโมสรโรตารีแห่งแรกในประเทศไทย ณ พระราชวังพญาไท เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๓ หลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง ได้ทรงปฏิบัติหน้าที่อภิรัฐมนตรีและร่วมในพระราชพิธีต่าง ๆ

He served as Commander of the Royal State Railways after the northern and southern railway systems had been unified, and he expanded railway routes across all regions of the country. In 1928, he ordered the purchase of Asia’s first diesel locomotive for use in place of steam locomotives.
