พระบรมฉายาลักษณ์ลงสีด้วย AI นี้ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เป็นผลงานความร่วมมือระหว่าง AI Fashion Lab และพิพิธภัณฑ์จังหวัดระนอง ร่วมกับคุณธนกร สุวุฒิกุล จากองค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัดระนอง โดยพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์นี้ของรัชกาลที่ ๕ ปรากฏอยู่ใน สมุดภาพเมืองระนอง
จริง ๆ แล้ว พระบรมฉายาลักษณ์ต้นฉบับนี้เป็นภาพที่ผมเคยค้นคว้าไว้ตั้งแต่สมัยศึกษาในระดับปริญญาเอกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๖๐ (ค.ศ. 2017) ซึ่งสามารถดาวน์โหลดภาพดิจิทัลต้นฉบับได้จากเว็บไซต์มหาวิทยาลัย Leiden ตามลิงก์นี้ครับ

บริบทของพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์นี้
ใน ร.ศ. ๑๐๙ ตรงกับ พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๓ พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าฯ เสด็จประพาสรอบแหลมมลายู และหัวเมืองชายฝั่งทะเลตะวันตกของสยามอย่างไม่เป็นทางการ โดยเรือพระที่นั่งอุบลบุรพทิศออกจากสมุทรปราการไปถึงชุมพร จากนั้นเสด็จโดยสถลมารคไปยังกระบุรี ก่อนลงเรือพระที่นั่งที่รอรับเสด็จไปยังระนอง ภูเก็ต พังงา ตรัง เกาะตะรุเตา ลังกาวี และปีนัง (ในขณะนั้นอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของอังกฤษ) ก่อนจะเสด็จประพาสอีกหลายเมืองและเสด็จนิวัติพระนคร
ในคราวเสด็จประพาสครั้งนี้ พระองค์ทรงประทับเป็นอาคันตุกะของตระกูล “คอ” หรือ “ณ ระนอง” โดยเจ้าเมืองระนองในเวลานั้นคือ พระยารัตนเศรษฐี (คอชิมก็อง) ซึ่งได้กราบบังคมทูลเชิญเสด็จไปประทับ ณ คฤหาสน์ในเมืองปีนังเป็นเวลาหลายวัน

This colourised image of King Chulalongkorn is a collaborative work between AI Fashion Lab and the Ranong Provincial Museum, together with Khun Thanakorn Suwutthikul from the Ranong Provincial Administrative Organisation. This portrait of King Rama V appears in The Ranong City Photo Album.

Context of this photograph
In R.S. 109 (1890), His Majesty King Chulalongkorn undertook an informal tour around the Malay Peninsula and the western coastal provinces of Siam. The royal yacht Ubolburapadit departed from Samut Prakan to Chumphon, from where His Majesty travelled overland to Kra Buri, before boarding another royal vessel that had been sent to receive him and take him to Ranong, Phuket, Phang Nga, Trang, Koh Tarutao, Langkawi, and Penang (then under British rule), continuing on to several other towns before returning to Bangkok.
During this journey, His Majesty stayed as a guest of the Khaw family (Na Ranong). The governor of Ranong at the time, Phraya Rattanasetthi (Khaw Sim Kong), invited him to reside at the family’s mansion in Penang for several days.
This photograph was taken by Mr August E. Kaulfuss, a German photographer who operated a photography business in Penang at the time.
