รู้หรือไม่ว่า “สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร” หรือพระนามเดิม “สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ” พระราชโอรสองค์โตใน พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ประสูติแต่สมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า เป็น “มกุฎราชกุมาร” องค์แรกแห่งราชวงศ์จักรี ทั้งยังเป็นพระราชโอรสอีกพระองค์หนึ่งที่ทรงสนิทชิดเชื้อกับพระราชบิดา
สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศเป็นพระราชโอรสองค์โตในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว กับสมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า ประสูติเมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี แรม 12 ค่ำ เดือน 7 ปีขาน สัมฤทธิศก จ.ศ. 1240 หรือเทียบให้ตรงกับวันเดือนปีปัจจุบัน คือ วันที่ 27 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2421
สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศถือเป็นพระราชโอรสอีกพระองค์หนึ่งที่ รัชกาล 5 ทรงรักและห่วงใยอย่างมาก
เหตุที่พูดเช่นนั้น เป็นเพราะว่าเมื่อพระองค์เจริญพระชันษาได้ 3 ปี พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงซื้อที่นาและสวนทางทิศตะวันออกของพระนคร เพื่อพระราชทานแก่พระองค์ และโปรดฯ ให้สร้างวังขึ้น
ต่อมา พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีพระราชพิธีลงสรงสนานเฉลิมพระปรมาภิไธย สถาปนาพระอิสริยยศ สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ เป็น สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร ณ วันที่ 14 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2429
การสถาปนาดังกล่าว เริ่มต้นครั้งแรกในรัชสมัยนี้ จึงทำให้พระองค์เป็นสยามมกุฎราชกุมารองค์แรกของไทย
นอกจากนี้แล้ว พระองค์ยังเป็นที่ไว้วางพระราชหฤทัยของพระราชบิดา เพราะหลายครั้งหลายหนพระองค์ได้เสด็จไปทรงประกอบพระราชกรณียกิจแทน ไม่ว่าจะเป็น เสด็จออกรับฎีกาที่ราษฎรทูลเกล้าฯ ถวาย หรือพระราชพิธีหรือพิธีสำคัญต่าง ๆ รวมถึงเสด็จพระราชดำเนินติดตามพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวไปหลายพื้นที่
ครั้งรัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงมีแผนจัดการทหารบกและทหารเรือให้มีระเบียบแบบแผน ก็โปรดฯ มอบตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการทั่วไป ให้เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ พร้อมให้ตราพระราชบัญญัติตั้งกรมทหารควบคู่ไปด้วย เนื่องจากพระองค์ยังทรงพระเยาว์
เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ พระองค์จึงทรงสนิทกับพระราชบิดาเป็นอย่างมาก โดยครั้งหนึ่ง พระองค์ได้ทรงพระราชนิพนธ์ลงหนังสือพิมพ์วชิรญาณถึงพระราชบิดาไว้ว่า…
“รักใครจะรักแม้น ชนกนารถ
รักบ่ออยากจะคลาศ สักน้อย
รักใดจะมิอาจ เทียมเท่า ท่านนา
รักยิ่งมิอยากคล้อย นิราศแคล้วสักวัน”
ทว่าความสุขกลับอยู่ได้ไม่นานเท่าที่ควร เพราะเมื่อวันศุกร์ ขึ้น 9 ค่ำ เดือนยี่ ปีมะเมีย ฉศก จุลศักราช 1256 ซึ่งตรงกับวันที่ 4 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2437 สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร ก็สวรรคต เนื่องด้วยพระโรคไข้รากสาดน้อย ซึ่งขณะนั้นพระองค์มีพระชันษาเพียง 16 ปี เท่านั้น
พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า ทรงเสียพระราชหฤทัยอย่างยิ่ง จนปรากฏข้อความในพระราชหัตถเลขาว่า
“…ลูกชายอันเป็นที่รักยิ่ง เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ มกุฎราชกุมาร อันฉันได้ตั้งใจประคับประคองป้องกันทำนุบำรุงมาโดยลำดับ จนถึงได้ตั้งแต่งไว้ในที่สำคัญเช่นนี้ มามีอันตรายโดยเร็วพลัน ให้ยังเกิดทุกข์โทมนัสอันแรงกล้า ในเวลาเมื่อกำลังที่จะเจริญด้วยไวยแลอายุ ทั้งความรู้ที่ได้เล่าเรียนอันเป็นที่มั่นหมายใจว่าคงจะเปนผู้ที่มีความรู้แลอัธยาไศรยสามารถอาจจะปกป้องวงษ์ตระกูลสืบไว้
การซึ่งได้คิดได้จัดเพื่อจะให้เปนความเจริญแก่ลูกอันเปนที่รัก กับทั้งหวังว่าจะให้เปนประโยชน์แก่ท่านทั้งหลายทั้งปวง โดยที่จะให้เปนผู้อุดหนุนแลป้องกันอันตราย มาลี้ลับดับไปโดยเร็วพลันเช่นนี้ จึ่งเปนที่ทุกข์ร้อนอันยิ่งใหญ่ ไม่สามารถที่จะพรรณาได้…”
ก่อนที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่จะทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ประดิษฐานพระบรมศพพระองค์ ไว้ที่ พระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาท ไว้ทุกข์ 1 เดือน และทรงให้มีพระราชกุศลทุก ๆ 7 วันนับตั้งแต่สวรรคต
จากนั้นจึงพระราชทานเพลิงพระบรมศพ ณ พระเมรุมณฑป วัดบวรสถานสุทธาวาส หรือวัดพระแก้ววังหน้า ก่อนจะนำพระบรมอัฐิไปประดิษฐาน ที่ วัดราชบพิธสถิตมหาสีมาราม

Few people realise that “Somdet Phra Boromma Orasathirat Prince Maha Vajirunhis, Crown Prince of Siam” (สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร)—whose birth name was “Somdet Phra Chao Lukya Ther Prince Maha Vajirunhis” (สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ)—was the eldest son of King Chulalongkorn and Queen Sri Savarindira, the Queen Grandmother (สมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า). He became the first Crown Prince in the Chakri Dynasty and was one of the royal children closest to his father.
Birth and Early Life
Prince Maha Vajirunhis was born on Thursday, the 12th waning day of the 7th lunar month, the Year of the Tiger, Chulasakarat 1240, corresponding to 27 June 1878.
As the eldest son of King Chulalongkorn and Queen Sri Savarindira, he received exceptional affection and attention from his father.
When the young prince was only three years old, King Chulalongkorn purchased rice fields and orchards east of Bangkok to bestow upon him, ordering the construction of a royal residence on the land—a testament to the King’s deep paternal affection.
Appointment as the First Crown Prince of Siam
On 14 January 1886 (พ.ศ. 2429), a royal ablution ceremony was held to elevate his rank.
He was formally invested as:
Somdet Phra Boromma Orasathirat Prince Maha Vajirunhis, Crown Prince of Siam
(สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร)
It was the first time in Siam’s history that a Crown Prince was officially created, establishing a precedent adhered to in subsequent reigns.
Duties and the King’s Trust
The young prince quickly became a trusted representative of his father. King Chulalongkorn entrusted him with numerous duties, including:
receiving petitions submitted by the people,
representing the King at important ceremonies, and
accompanying the King on royal journeys throughout the kingdom.
When King Chulalongkorn reorganised the Siamese army and navy, he entrusted the position of Commander-in-Chief to Prince Vajirunhis, establishing the relevant departments alongside it—despite the prince still being very young.
Their relationship was one of deep affection, reflected in verses the prince once wrote to his father, published in Wachirayan magazine:
“If love there be, none can match
A child’s love for his father.
No love can equal yours,
Nor would I ever wish to part from you,
Not even for a day.”
A Life Cut Tragically Short
The happiness of father and son was not to last.
On Friday, the 9th waxing day of the 2nd lunar month, the Year of the Horse, Chulasakarat 1256, corresponding to
4 January 1894, Prince Maha Vajirunhis passed away from typhoid fever at the age of 16.
His death caused profound grief to King Chulalongkorn and Queen Sri Savarindira.
In the King’s own words, recorded in a royal letter, he expressed:
“…My dearly beloved son, Prince Maha Vajirunhis, the Crown Prince, whom I have carefully nurtured and placed in so important a position, has been taken from me so suddenly. At the very age when he was growing strong, acquiring learning, and becoming the person I hoped would protect our lineage, all plans I had made for his future and for the good of the people have vanished in an instant. The sorrow is so great that it cannot be described.”
Funeral and Final Rites
King Chulalongkorn commanded that the Prince’s body be placed in state at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall (พระที่นั่งดุสิตมหาปราสาท) for a mourning period of one month, with royal merit-making ceremonies held every seven days.
The royal cremation was conducted at the royal crematorium of Wat Bovoranives Vihara (วัดบวรสถานสุทธาวาส หรือวัดพระแก้ววังหน้า).
Afterwards, the royal relics were enshrined at Wat Ratchabophit Sathitmahasimaram (วัดราชบพิธสถิตมหาสีมาราม).
