กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน พระนามเดิม พระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ พระองค์เจ้าบุรฉัตรไชยากร (23 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2425 – 14 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2479) เป็นพระราชโอรสในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวกับเจ้าจอมมารดาวาด ดำรงตำแหน่งองคมนตรี แม่ทัพภาคที่ ๑ พระองค์แรก จเรทหารช่าง ผู้บัญชาการกรมรถไฟหลวง และเสนาบดีกระทรวงพาณิชย์และคมนาคม ทั้งยังทรงริเริ่มการค้นหาปิโตรเลียมในประเทศสยาม และทรงเป็นต้นราชสกุลฉัตรชัย
เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดให้ยุบรวมกระทรวงพาณิชย์และกระทรวงคมนาคม จึงโปรดให้กรมหลวงกำแพงเพชรฯ รับตำแหน่งผู้รั้งเสนาบดีกระทรวงคมนาคมและพาณิชยการ ตั้งแต่วันที่ ๒๓ มีนาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๘ จนถึงวันที่ ๑๔ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๙ จึงทรงตั้งเป็นเสนาบดีกระทรวงพาณิชย์และคมนาคม และทำการในตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการรถไฟหลวงแห่งกรุงสยามด้วย ต่อมา วันที่ ๘ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๒ โปรดให้เลื่อนเป็น พระเจ้าพี่ยาเธอ กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน ประชาธิบดินทรเจษฎภาดา ปิยมหาราชวงศ์วิศิษฎ์ อเนกยนตรวิจิตรกฤตยโกศล วิมลรัตนมหาโยธาธิบดี ราชธุรันธรีมโหฬาร พาณิชยการคมนาคม อุดมรัตนตรัยสรณธาดา มัททวเมตตาชวาศรัย ฉัตรชัยดิลกบพิตร ทรงศักดินา ๑๕,๐๐๐ และได้รับโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นอภิรัฐมนตรีในวันที่ ๒๑ ตุลาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๔ ทรงเป็นองคมนตรีในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๗ จนถึงปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๕
พระกรณียกิจด้านการรถไฟและการคมนาคม
พระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน ทรงบุกเบิกกิจการรถไฟสยาม โดยดำรงตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการกรมรถไฟหลวงหลังการรวมกิจการรถไฟสายเหนือและสายใต้ ทรงขยายเส้นทางรถไฟทุกภูมิภาค และในปี พ.ศ. 2471 โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สั่งซื้อรถจักรดีเซลคันแรกของเอเชียมาใช้แทนรถจักรไอน้ำ นอกจากนี้ ยังทรงรับผิดชอบงานด้านทางหลวงและสะพาน เช่น สะพานกษัตริย์ศึก สะพานรัษฎาภิเศก และสะพานพระราม 6 รวมถึงทรงริเริ่มการสำรวจปิโตรเลียมที่อำเภอฝาง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ อันนับเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของการค้นหาพลังงานในประเทศ

ทรงเป็นผู้ริเริ่มการสื่อสารสมัยใหม่ในสยาม โปรดให้ติดตั้งเครื่องส่งวิทยุกระจายเสียงและเปิด “สถานีวิทยุกรุงเทพฯ ที่พญาไท” เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2473 อีกทั้งทรงผลักดันแนวคิดการแพร่ภาพโทรทัศน์ แม้มิได้เกิดขึ้นจริงจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง พ.ศ. 2475 ทรงขยายกิจการไปรษณีย์ โทรเลข และโทรศัพท์ทั่วประเทศ รวมทั้งทรงสนพระทัยการบิน ทรงทดลองขับเครื่องบินและวางรากฐานการบินพาณิชย์ของไทย
ด้านอื่น ๆ
ต่อมา พ.ศ. 2469 ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเสนาบดีกระทรวงพาณิชย์และคมนาคม และเป็นนายกสภาเผยแผ่พาณิชย์ อีกทั้งยังเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งสโมสรโรตารีแห่งแรกในประเทศไทย ณ พระราชวังพญาไท เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2473 หลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง ได้ทรงปฏิบัติหน้าที่อภิรัฐมนตรีและร่วมในพระราชพิธีต่าง ๆ

H.H. Prince Purachatra Jayakara, Prince of Kamphaeng Phet Akkarayothin [พระเจ้าลูกยาเธอ พระองค์เจ้าบุรฉัตรไชยากร กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน] (23 January 1882 – 14 September 1936), was the 38th son of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) [พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว] by Chao Chom Manda Wat [เจ้าจอมมารดาวาด]. He held numerous high offices including Privy Councillor, the first Commander of the 1st Army Region, Inspector-General of Engineers, Director-General of the Royal State Railways, and Minister of Commerce and Communications. He was also the pioneer of petroleum exploration in Siam, and is recognised as the progenitor of the Chatrajaya family [ราชสกุลฉัตรชัย].
In 1925, King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) [พระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว] merged the Ministry of Commerce with the Ministry of Transport, appointing the Prince as Acting Minister, before formally naming him Minister of Commerce and Communications in 1926, while continuing as Director-General of the Royal State Railways. Prince Purachatra Jayakara [กรมพระกำแพงเพชรอัครโยธิน] pioneered Siam’s railway development. As Director-General of the Royal State Railways after the unification of the Northern and Southern lines, he expanded the network across all regions.
