Queen Saovabha Phongsri and Her Double-Strand Pearl Necklace with Pear-Shaped Diamonds
This AI-restored and creatively reconstructed portrait depicts Her Majesty Queen Saovabha Phongsri, the Queen Mother of Siam, and highlights one of her favourite pieces of jewellery: a double-strand pearl necklace adorned with pear-shaped diamonds. The Queen wore this necklace in several surviving royal portraits, with variations primarily in the additional jewellery she chose to wear on each occasion.
The same pearl necklace with pear-shaped diamonds also appears in a royal portrait brooch executed in the traditional Ratchawadi enamelling technique, surrounded by a diamond-set frame.
The two original royal portraits are believed to have been taken between the late reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and the early reign of King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), approximately 1905–1915, a period from which a considerable number of exceptionally beautiful and well-preserved royal photographs have survived.
Royal Attire and Jewellery
The Queen's attire reflects the Late Edwardian and Early Teens styles, characterised by an elegant lace blouse with a low neckline and three-quarter-length sleeves. The garment features decorative lace drapery resembling a ceremonial sash, together with a lace shawl draped across her shoulders.
The Royal Decoration of King Rama V, First Class, is pinned to the lace at the left side of her chest, while the fabric falls gracefully towards her right side. She wears traditional Siamese chong kraben, a wrapped lower garment, and holds a Chinese fan, enhancing the elegance and refinement of the overall composition.
Her Majesty wears the magnificent double-strand pearl necklace with pear-shaped diamonds, complemented by an elaborate diamond-and-pearl festoon ornament radiating broadly across her chest.
It is believed that this ornament may originally have been a necklace that was sewn directly onto her blouse, creating the appearance of jewellery integrated into the fabric itself. She also wears several other pieces of exceptional diamond jewellery, reflecting the Queen's exalted royal status and extraordinarily refined taste.
The Extraordinary Wealth of Queen Saovabha Phongsri
The remarkable wealth of Queen Saovabha Phongsri was recorded by her British personal physician, Dr Malcolm Smith, who estimated her annual income as follows:
"...Apart from the very considerable wealth which Her Majesty already possessed, and the regular annual allowance which she received, the Queen Mother also had an independent income derived from her private fortune. From what Her Majesty herself once told me, I estimated that her total income from all sources amounted to approximately £80,000–£90,000 per annum..."
As the principal royal consort who held the exalted title of Her Majesty the Queen, and having twice served as Regent on behalf of her royal husband, King Chulalongkorn, Queen Saovabha Phongsri possessed an extraordinary collection of magnificent and exceptionally valuable jewellery, suitable for a wide range of royal ceremonies and occasions.
Among her most remarkable jewellery collections were the following:
1. The Round Diamond Parure
This magnificent set consisted of large, exceptionally clear, colourless diamonds arranged around the neck in two cascading tiers resembling elaborate diamond festoons.
The matching ornaments included a diamond tiara in the form of chrysanthemum blossoms, designed to encircle the head, together with a large cascading chrysanthemum diamond brooch composed of three floral clusters.
The set also included two intricately designed openwork diamond bracelets and matching diamond rings.
2. The Large Round Diamond Parure
This imposing set featured a spectacular three-tier diamond necklace composed of exceptionally large round diamonds, arranged in graduated rows around the neck.
It was reserved for occasions when Her Majesty appeared in full ceremonial regalia befitting a royal queen.
This celebrated necklace was known as the "Mae Setthi Diamond Necklace" (สร้อยเพชรแม่เศรษฐี), a name that might loosely be rendered as "The Millionaire's Mother Diamond Necklace", reflecting its extraordinary size, magnificence, and immense value.
3. The Pear-Shaped Diamond and Pearl Parure
This remarkable suite consisted of an elaborate diamond necklace with large, lustrous pearls interspersed among exceptional pear-shaped diamonds.
The diamonds were particularly notable for their extraordinary size, exceptional clarity, and brilliance.
The matching ornaments included a diamond-and-pearl tiara featuring pear-shaped diamonds and pearls, together with an elaborate diamond-and-pearl festoon necklace whose radiating design spread magnificently across the chest.
This is the pear-shaped diamond and pearl jewellery suite featured in the accompanying illustration.
4. The Ruby Parure
This magnificent suite was composed of rubies of exceptional quality, distinguished by their vivid, intense red colour.
The rubies were cut into heart, rectangular, and oval shapes, and mounted in elaborate diamond settings incorporating auspicious decorative motifs.
The collection included a necklace, an elaborate diamond-and-ruby festoon ornament featuring bird motifs, upper-arm bracelets, earrings, wrist bracelets, rings, insect-shaped brooches, and a belt buckle set with rubies of the highest quality.
5. The Emerald Parure
This extraordinary suite featured exceptionally large rectangular emeralds of outstanding quality, distinguished by their vivid, rich green colour.
The collection comprised an emerald necklace, upper-arm bracelets, wrist bracelets, rings, and various brooches, all incorporating magnificent emeralds surrounded by diamonds.
It was said that this remarkable emerald collection ranked among the most valuable gemstone collections in the entire East.
6. The Sapphire Parure
This exquisite collection comprised precious deep-blue sapphires set within elaborate diamond mounts, incorporating delicate stems and traditional kanok ornamental motifs.
The collection also featured beautiful violet-blue sapphires, traditionally described in Thai as having the colour of water hyacinth blossoms.
These stones formed part of an exceptionally elaborate sapphire jewellery suite, including magnificent necklaces and festoon ornaments, distinguished by their intricate craftsmanship and splendour.
7. The Pearl Collection
In addition to these spectacular gemstone parures, Queen Saovabha Phongsri amassed an extraordinary collection of pearls in numerous colours and sizes, ranging from exceptionally large specimens to smaller, perfectly matched pearls.
Among the most remarkable pieces were three elaborate festoon-style pearl ornaments composed of exceptionally large pearls, with suspended diamond pendants positioned at regular intervals.
These could be combined with other pearl ornaments from her extensive collection.
Her Majesty also possessed beautiful pale rose-coloured pearls, honey-yellow pearls, and numerous other pearls of exceptional quality.
Queen Saovabha Phongsri's Passion for Precious Jewels
Queen Saovabha Phongsri had a profound appreciation for magnificent jewellery and precious gemstones.
Many pieces were presented to her by her royal husband, King Chulalongkorn, who was known to take particular care in selecting exceptional gemstones and valuable jewels for his principal consort during his overseas travels.
On numerous occasions, His Majesty returned from foreign journeys bearing magnificent jewels as royal gifts for the Queen.
Beyond these gifts, Queen Saovabha also acquired many pieces through purchases made with her own private fortune, while other jewels were presented to her by individuals seeking to honour her.
She additionally received valuable jewellery as diplomatic gifts from foreign sovereigns, including a diamond crown or tiara from the Empress of Russia, and a magnificent sapphire-and-diamond bracelet from the Empress of Italy.
These extraordinary jewels formed one of the most remarkable royal jewellery collections in Siam during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Royal Jewellery Collection at Phaya Thai Palace
The immense collection of precious jewellery belonging to Queen Saovabha Phongsri was entrusted to the care of Chao Chom Mom Rajawongse Paem Malakul, one of the ladies of the royal household.
His Royal Highness Prince Chula Chakrabongse, in his autobiographical work Kerd Wang Parus (Born in Paruskavan Palace), described the extraordinary scale of the Queen Mother's jewellery collection:
"...Whenever Her Majesty was preparing to attend an event, the ladies of her household would bring out all her diamond jewellery for her to choose from, with the exception of the truly magnificent major pieces, which were not kept at Phaya Thai Palace. Those important collections were stored at the Grand Palace.
Even so, the smaller pieces of her jewellery resembled the stock of a large jewellery establishment in one of Europe's great capitals.
The ladies-in-waiting had to carry them out on tray after tray. Sometimes, a single tray alone would contain as many as sixty diamond and gemstone rings."
This remarkable account offers a glimpse into the extraordinary scale of Queen Saovabha Phongsri's personal jewellery collection, as well as the wealth, magnificence, and refined material culture of the Siamese royal court during the final decades of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.
