The Dress Style of Nan Nobility from the Late Reign of King Rama V to the Reign of King Rama VI

This photograph, restored with AI technology, originates from two different sources and dates from the late reign of King Rama V to the reign of King Rama VI.

These images represent creative interpretations of colour and pattern. They are not replicas of authentic textiles, but artistic reimaginings.

Photographs 1 and 2 were published by Khun Peerapong Maneerat (คุณพีระพงศ์ มณีรัตน์), a descendant of the ruling family of Nan, who governed Nan from 1825 (พ.ศ. 2368) until 1931 (พ.ศ. 2474). They show:

1. Chao Ratchawong (Sutthisan) [เจ้าราชวงศ์ (สุทธิสาร)] and Chao Buakhiao Na Nan [เจ้าบัวเขียว ณ น่าน]

2. Chao Rajabut (Mokfa) [เจ้าราชบุตร (หมอกฟ้า)] and Chao Bunsoem Na Nan [เจ้าบุญโสม ณ น่าน]

Both men wear the raj patten jacket, a style popular in Bangkok at the time, along with a chong kraben. The women wear long-sleeved blouses, draped shoulder cloths in the sawai chiang style (similar to a sabai), and patterned teen jok tubular skirts (sinh) characteristic of Nan weaving traditions.

Photographs 3 and 4 were published by the Lanna Photo Archive, Chiang Mai, and come from the residence of Chao Thongyon Wisitsri [เจ้าทองย่น วิสิทฐศรี], daughter of Chao Inta and Chao Bunyuern Wisitsri [เจ้าอินต๊ะ และ เจ้าบุญยืน วิสิทฐศรี].

3. Chao Inta and Chao Bunyuern (Na Nan) Sanrat [เจ้าอินต๊ะ และ เจ้าบุญยืน (ณ น่าน) สารรัตน์], the parents of Chao Thongyon Rattanawongchai [เจ้าทองย่น รัตนวงศ์ไชย]. Chao Inta Sanrat wears a raj patten jacket, popular in Bangkok, with a chong kraben. Chao Bunyuern Sanrat wears a long-sleeved blouse, a draped sawai chiang cloth (similar to a sabai), and a sinh pong — a rare and distinctive skirt type found only in Nan.

4. A double portrait of two unidentified individuals, believed to be the parents of Chao Bunsoem Rattanawongchai [เจ้าบุญสม รัตนวงศ์ไชย].
