The book was published in 1857 (2400 BE), following the signing of the Bowring Treaty in 1855 (2398 BE).
This work remains one of the most significant historical records of nineteenth-century Siam. It documents in detail the kingdom’s system of governance, religion, culture, economy, trade, and the everyday lives of its people. The accompanying illustrations are of exceptional historical value, particularly the portrait likeness of King Mongkut, which serves not only as a historical artefact but also as a visual reflection of how Siam was perceived by the Western world in the mid-nineteenth century.
