ในการออกแบบคอลเลกชันนี้ซึ่งสะท้อนแฟชั่นในช่วงต้นรัชกาลที่ ๗ ผมตั้งใจเลือกใช้ซิลูเอตที่เรียบง่ายแทบเป็นทรงกระบอกโดยไม่มีการเน้นส่วนเว้าโค้ง เพื่อสะท้อนเส้นสายอันงดงามของการแต่งกายสตรีไทยในช่วงปลายทศวรรษ 1920 ถึงต้นทศวรรษ 1930 และด้วยความเรียบง่ายนี้เอง ผมจึงให้ความสำคัญเป็นพิเศษกับงานปักบนเสื้อ ซึ่งกลายเป็นจุดเด่นของชุดทั้งหมด
หัวใจของการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานคอลเลกชันนี้อยู่ที่ซิลูเอตแฟชั่นยุค 1920s ซึ่งนับเป็นจุดเปลี่ยนสำคัญของโลกแฟชั่น จากเดิมที่ผู้หญิงตะวันตกนิยมโครงร่างเงาแบบทรงนาฬิกาทรายแบบยุคเอ็ดเวิร์ดเดียน ได้เปลี่ยนมาเป็นลุคที่เน้นความเรียบง่าย และเสื้อผ้าแบบทรงสมมาตร ปราศจากโครงเสื้อที่รัดรูป โครงร่างเงาของเครื่องแต่งกายสตรีในยุคนี้นิยมเสื้อผ้าทรงหลวม ๆ และช่วงเอวต่ำ ซึ่งให้ความรู้สึกความเป็นอิสระและทันสมัย
งานปักในคอลเลกชันนี้มีรายละเอียดที่ละเอียดละออแต่ไม่ฉูดฉาด ประกอบด้วยลวดลายที่ซ้อนทับกันหลายชั้น ส่วนใหญ่เป็นลายดอกไม้ ปักด้วยไหมโลหะ ลูกปัดแก้ว และไข่มุกเทียมอย่างพิถีพิถัน หากซูมเข้าไปดูใกล้ ๆ จะเห็นได้ชัดถึงความประณีตของแต่ละฝีเข็ม ด้วยการเลือกใช้วัสดุที่แตกต่างกันเพื่อสร้างมิติทางสายตา จุดประสงค์ไม่ใช่เพื่อดึงดูดความสนใจแบบฉับพลัน แต่เพื่อให้ความละเอียดของงานออกแบบให้มีมิติมากขึ้น
นอกจากนี้ ผมยังได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากสถาปัตยกรรมแบบโคโลเนียลในกรุงเทพฯ ซึ่งเฟื่องฟูในช่วงปลายรัชกาลที่ ๖ ถึงต้นรัชกาลที่ ๗ โดยเฉพาะบ้านไม้ที่ทาสีเขียวอ่อนสบายตา มีการประดับด้วยไม้ฉลุลายไทยผสมตะวันตกอย่างอ่อนช้อย ทั้งบริเวณชายคา หน้าต่าง และระเบียง ลวดลายเหล่านี้มีทั้งลายพรรณพฤกษาและลายเรขาคณิต ซึ่งกลมกลืนกับธรรมชาติรอบบ้าน สถาปัตยกรรมลักษณะนี้ไม่เพียงแค่สะท้อนความงามของยุคนั้น แต่ยังเป็นเครื่องเตือนใจถึงการผสมผสานระหว่างวัฒนธรรมไทยกับตะวันตกในยุคเปลี่ยนผ่าน ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับแนวทางของคอลเลกชันที่ผมออกแบบอย่างยิ่ง
Where Simplicity Meets Craft: Embroidered Elegance of 1920s Siam
In designing this collection, which reflects women's fashion in the early reign of King Rama VII, I intentionally chose a simple, almost cylindrical silhouette with minimal emphasis on curves. This approach captures the elegant lines of Thai women’s dress styles from the late 1920s to early 1930s. With such simplicity in form, I placed special emphasis on the embroidery, which became the focal point of each ensemble.
The heart of this collection lies in the silhouette of 1920s fashion—an era that marked a pivotal transformation in the fashion world. Western women moved away from the hourglass figures of the Edwardian era towards a more streamlined and modern aesthetic, featuring symmetrical garments with dropped waists and loose-fitting cuts. These styles conveyed a sense of freedom and contemporary sophistication.
The embroidery in this collection is intricate yet understated, composed of layered floral patterns stitched with metallic threads, glass beads, and imitation pearls. Each stitch is meticulously crafted to create visual depth through the use of contrasting materials. Rather than seeking immediate attention, the purpose of this embellishment is to offer subtle richness and dimensional beauty that rewards closer inspection.
Additionally, I was inspired by the colonial architecture found in Bangkok, particularly the wooden houses popular during the late reign of King Rama VI through to the early years of King Rama VII. These homes were often painted in soft shades of green and adorned with delicately carved fretwork blending Thai and Western decorative motifs. The intricate woodwork—especially under the eaves, around windows, and across balconies—featured both floral and geometric patterns, harmonising beautifully with the surrounding tropical landscape. This style of architecture not only reflects the aesthetic values of that transitional era but also resonates deeply with the concept of cultural hybridity at the heart of this collection.
