สมเด็จพระมหิตลาธิเบศร อดุลยเดชวิกรม พระบรมราชชนก (1 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2435 – 24 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2472) พระราชโอรสในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และสมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า
พระองค์ทรงเป็นต้นราชสกุลมหิดล และทรงเป็นสมเด็จพระบรมราชชนกในพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดล และพระบาทสมเด็จพระมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช อีกทั้งยังทรงเป็นสมเด็จพระบรมอัยกาธิบดีในพระบาทสมเด็จพระวชิรเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวในปัจจุบัน
พระราชประวัติและการศึกษา
สมเด็จพระบรมราชชนกทรงมีพระอุปนิสัยใฝ่รู้ สนพระราชหฤทัยในวิทยาศาสตร์การแพทย์และการสาธารณสุข ทรงเริ่มศึกษาวิชาทหารเรือที่โรงเรียนนายเรือเมือร์วิค ประเทศเยอรมนี ต่อมาเสด็จไปศึกษาวิชาแพทยศาสตร์ที่มหาวิทยาลัยฮาร์วาร์ด สหรัฐอเมริกา และมหาวิทยาลัยเอดินบะระ สกอตแลนด์ จนทรงได้รับประกาศนียบัตรด้านแพทยศาสตร์และสาธารณสุขศาสตร์ ซึ่งเป็นรากฐานสำคัญในการพัฒนาการแพทย์ไทยให้ทัดเทียมกับนานาประเทศ
พระราชกรณียกิจด้านการแพทย์
พระองค์ทรงสนับสนุนการพัฒนาการศึกษาแพทย์อย่างเป็นระบบ ได้แก่
การปรับปรุงหลักสูตรและการเรียนการสอนของคณะแพทยศาสตร์ศิริราชพยาบาล (ปัจจุบันคือมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล)
การริเริ่มคณะแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย
การพระราชทานทุนส่วนพระองค์แก่นักศึกษาแพทย์และผู้สนใจวิทยาศาสตร์สุขภาพไปศึกษาต่อต่างประเทศ เพื่อนำความรู้กลับมารับใช้บ้านเมือง
ด้วยเหตุนี้ประชาชนจึงถวายพระสมัญญานามว่า “พระบิดาแห่งการแพทย์แผนปัจจุบันของไทย”

Prince Mahidol of Songkla (สมเด็จพระมหิตลาธิเบศร อดุลยเดชวิกรม พระบรมราชชนก)
(1 January 1892 – 24 September 1929) was a prince of Siam, the son of King Chulalongkorn (พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว) and Queen Savang Vadhana (สมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า).
He was the founder of the Mahidol royal lineage (ราชสกุลมหิดล) and is revered as the Royal Father of King Ananda Mahidol (พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดล) and King Bhumibol Adulyadej of the present monarch, King Vajiralongkorn (พระบาทสมเด็จพระวชิรเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว).

Prince Mahidol possessed a strong intellectual curiosity and a profound commitment to science, particularly medicine and public health. He initially pursued naval studies at the Imperial German Naval Academy at Mürwik in Germany. Subsequently, he turned his focus to medicine, undertaking medical and public health studies at Harvard University, United States, and at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His training and qualifications in these fields laid a crucial foundation for the modernisation of Thai medicine and public health.
Contributions to Medicine and Public Health
Prince Mahidol’s enduring legacy lies in his systematic support for medical education and healthcare development in Thailand. His principal contributions include:
The reform and enhancement of curricula and teaching standards at Siriraj Medical School, now part of Mahidol University.
His instrumental role in the establishment and early development of the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University.
The provision of personal scholarships to Thai students in medicine and health sciences, enabling them to study abroad and return to serve the nation.
In recognition of these unparalleled contributions, the Thai people respectfully bestowed upon him the title:
“The Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health of Thailand”
