He was the husband of Chao Wiang Chuen Thepwong, daughter of Chao Luang Phiriya Thepwong (Phaya Phiriya Vichai), the last ruler of Phrae. On the right sits Chao In Plaeng Thepwong, or Chao In Plaeng, the only son of Chao Luang Phiriya Thepwong, the 22nd ruler of Phrae, and Mae Chao Bua Lai Thepwong, his principal consort. Chao In Plaeng Thepwong later had a son, Chao Intradej Thepwong, better known by his pen name Yakhob, the celebrated novelist.
The photograph was taken at the former residence of Mae Chao Bua Lai Thepwong. Their attire reflects elite male fashion during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), influenced by Western styles and adopted in Lanna’s noble circles. This hybrid style was fashionable at the time, showing influence not only from Bangkok but also from British subjects in Burma and French Indochina across the Lao frontier.
