“วันพระราชชายาเจ้าดารารัศมี” ตรงกับวันที่ ๙ ธันวาคมของทุกปี อันเป็นวันคล้ายวันสิ้นพระชนม์ของ เจ้าดารารัศมี พระราชชายา แห่งราชวงศ์ทิพย์จักร นครเชียงใหม่ ผู้ทรงมีบทบาทสำคัญยิ่งต่อการวางรากฐานความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างล้านนาและสยามในปลายคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ ๑๙
พระราชชายาฯ ทรงถวายตัวเป็นบาทจาริกาในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เพื่อเป็นหลักประกันทางการเมืองและวัฒนธรรมให้แก่ล้านนาในยามที่กระแสอำนาจจากชาติตะวันตกกำลังรุมเร้าแผ่นดินสยาม บทบาทของพระองค์จึงเป็นมากกว่าพระสนมฝ่ายใน หากแต่เป็น “ผู้แทนล้านนา” ที่ทรงช่วยสถาปนาความมั่นคงและความเป็นเอกภาพของราชอาณาจักรผ่านพระอัจฉริยภาพ ความสุขุม และพระราชหฤทัยอันแน่วแน่
ในอีกด้านหนึ่ง เจ้าดารารัศมี พระราชชายา ยังทรงเป็นผู้ฟื้นฟูศิลปวัฒนธรรมล้านนาอย่างกว้างขวาง—ตั้งแต่ การฟ้อนล้านนา เครื่องแต่งกาย ขนบธรรมเนียม การทอผ้า ดนตรีพื้นเมือง ตลอดจนรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมและศิลปประดิษฐ์—ให้กลับมารุ่งเรืองและได้รับการยอมรับในระดับราชสำนักสยาม หลายสิ่งที่พระองค์ทรงบำรุงรักษายังคงเป็นรากฐานของอัตลักษณ์ล้านนาที่เห็นได้จนถึงทุกวันนี้

The Day of Princess Dara Rasami (“วันพระราชชายาเจ้าดารารัศมี”) is observed annually on 9 December, the anniversary of the passing of Princess Dara Rasami (เจ้าดารารัศมี), Royal Consort of King Chulalongkorn (พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว, Rama V) and a princess of the Tipchak–Chakkri Dynasty (ราชวงศ์ทิพย์จักร) of Chiang Mai. Her life and work played a decisive role in shaping the political and cultural relationship between Lanna and Siam in the late nineteenth century.
Princess Dara Rasami entered the Siamese court as a baat chareekaa (บาทจาริกา) (a royal consort), a political and cultural guarantee for the autonomy and security of Lanna at a time when colonial powers were exerting mounting pressure on Siamese territories. Her role extended far beyond that of a royal consort: she became a representative of Lanna within the court of Bangkok, strengthening unity within the kingdom through her intelligence, composure, and unwavering dedication.
At the same time, Princess Dara Rasami was a pivotal figure in the revival and preservation of Lanna arts and culture. Her patronage encompassed Lanna dance (ฟ้อนล้านนา), traditional costume, courtly etiquette, textile weaving, northern musical heritage, and even architectural and decorative arts. Many elements of Lanna identity that remain cherished today endure because of her efforts to safeguard and elevate them within the Siamese royal court.
Her legacy therefore belongs not only to history, but to the cultural inheritance of the people of Chiang Mai and the wider northern region. On 9 December, the people of Lanna gather in the spirit of “Wai Sa Baat Chao” (ไหว้สาบาทเจ้า)(paying the utmost homage to the Princess) to honour her compassion, her service, and the enduring brilliance of her contributions—resonating still in the cultural life, traditions, and collective memory of Lanna to this day.
