According to available information, the yellow diamond and some of the floral elements can be detached from the tiara frame and worn separately as a bandeau, necklace, or bracelet.
This tiara was created by Van Cleef & Arpels around 1960. It was designed in accordance with traditional Thai forms of royal head ornament, and set with white and yellow diamonds. A publication on Van Cleef & Arpels records that, while the tiara mounting was being made in Paris, the large yellow diamonds at the centre were not sent to France. Instead, zircons of the exact same size were provided, allowing the jewellers to construct the setting with precision. The actual yellow diamonds were mounted only after the tiara had arrived in Thailand.
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit wore this tiara frequently during the 1960s and 1970s, especially on state visits to Europe and the United States, as well as for important royal ceremonies and state banquets. In this portrait, she is also wearing a ruby and diamond necklace with matching earrings, together with the sash of the Order of the Netherlands Lion and its breast star. These elements express both royal dignity and the diplomatic friendship between the Thai royal court and the Dutch royal house.
Thailand and the Netherlands first established diplomatic relations in 1604, during the reign of King Ekathotsarot of Ayutthaya (Somdet Phra Ekathotsarot / สมเด็จพระเอกาทศรถ). Since then, relations between the two countries have continued for more than 400 years.
In 1960, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Phra Bat Somdet Phra Boromchanakathibet Maha Bhumibol Adulyadej Maharaj Borommanat Bophit / พระบาทสมเด็จพระบรมชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรมนาถบพิตร), accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, paid an official state visit to the Netherlands. Her Majesty Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, accompanied by Prince Bernhard, Prince Consort of the Netherlands(Chaochai Bernhard Phra Ratchasawami / เจ้าชายเบิร์นฮาร์ด พระราชสวามี), and Princess Beatrix (Chaofa Ying Beatrix/ เจ้าฟ้าหญิงเบียทริกซ์), who later became Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and abdicated in 2013, paid an official state visit to Thailand between 15 and 22 October 1963.
On this occasion, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother hosted royal banquets in honour of their distinguished guests. Their Majesties also accompanied the Dutch royal visitors to view the Royal Barge Procession at Tha Ratchaworadit (ท่าราชวรดิฐ), one of the most magnificent ceremonial traditions of the Thai royal court.
