The photograph was taken in A.D. 1865 (B.E. 2408) by John Thomson during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV, reigned B.E. 2394–2411). It depicts King Mongkut proceeding in a Royal Land Procession during the annual Kathin ceremony at Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram (Thailand) on 13 October B.E. 2408.
Thomson’s residence in Siam (Thailand) between A.D. 1865–1867 resulted in one of the earliest systematic photographic documentations of the kingdom. He employed the wet plate collodion process, a demanding technique requiring long exposure times and the immediate chemical development of glass plate negatives under highly sensitive conditions.

The Phra Kliap royal crown, also known as the Royal Petal Crown, was created during the reign of King Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I). It is crafted from gold, enamelled in ratchawadi style, and set with diamonds. The finial takes the form of a pavilion-like spire, adorned with golden pine-leaf motifs at the apex and ear ornaments. It features a single-tiered circlet constructed in seven superimposed alms-bowl-shaped tiers, with the lowest tier decorated with articulated floral pendants.
