"...สมเด็จย่าใหญ่ พี่สาวท้องเดียวกันกับย่า เวลานั้นประทับอยู่ที่วังสระปทุม และท่านมีลูกที่ยังทรงพระชนม์อยู่ ๒ พระองค์ คือ สมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าหญิงวไลยอลงกรณ์ กรมหลวงเพชรบุรีราชสิรินทร ซึ่งข้าพเจ้าเรียกว่า ทูลหม่อมอาหญิง ทูลหม่อมอาหญิงนั้นประทับอยู่ประจำที่พญาไทกับย่าของข้าพเจ้า และท่านเรียกย่าของข้าพเจ้าว่า เสด็จแม่ และกลับเรียกแม่แท้ๆ ของท่านว่า เสด็จป้า อันดูออกจะยุ่งเหยิงมาก ความจริงเป็นเพราะบรรดาลูกๆ ของสมเด็จย่าใหญ่รวมทั้งทูลหม่อมลุงองค์ใหญ่ (สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ) ก็ได้พากันสิ้นพระชนม์ไปแต่ยังทรงพระเยาว์เป็นส่วนมาก ทูลหม่อมอาหญิงจึงเลยมาเปลี่ยนเป็นลูกของย่าเสียแทน เมื่อข้าพเจ้ายังเด็กๆ อยู่จำได้ว่าทูลหม่อมอาหญิงนั้น ท่านทั้งงามทั้งเก๋ ข้าพเจ้าชอบไปเฝ้าท่านบ่อยๆ ท่านทรงมีห้องประทับอยู่ทางอีกด้านหนึ่งของตำหนักพญาไท ท่านมีหนังสืออังกฤษประกอบรูปเป็นอันมาก ซึ่งข้าพเจ้าชอบดู และเพราะข้าพเจ้าอ่านภาษาอังกฤษไม่ออก ท่านจึงทรงแปลและอธิบายถึงรูปต่างๆ ให้ข้าพเจ้าฟังเสมอ
ทูลหม่อมอาหญิงท่านทรงมีน้องชายเหลืออยู่พระองค์เดียว คือสมเด็จเจ้าฟ้ามหิดลอดุลยเดช กรมขุนสงขลานครินทร์ ซึ่งข้าพเจ้าเรียกว่า ทูลหม่อมอาแดง ทูลหม่อมอาแดงทรงได้รับการศึกษาอย่างแปลกมาก คือชั้นต้นถูกส่งไปประเทศอังกฤษไปเข้าโรงเรียนมัธยมกินนอนแฮร์โรว์ (Harrow School) เมื่อออกจากแฮร์โรว์แล้ว แทนที่จะอยู่ศึกษาที่อังกฤษต่อไป ท่านถูกส่งไปเยอรมนี และได้เข้าโรงเรียนนายเรือจนได้เป็นนายทหารเรือ พอท่านจะได้เริ่มสนุกในการเป็นนายทหารเรือเยอรมัน ก็ต้องออกจากกองทัพเรือ เพราะมหายุทธสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่งได้บังเกิดขึ้น ทูลหม่อมอาแดงทรงเคยเล่าว่า เมื่อสงครามเกิดขึ้นใหม่ ท่านได้ถูกจับเอาเสียด้วย เพราะท่านยังทรงแต่งเครื่องแบบนายทหารเรือเยอรมัน จึงถูกหาว่าเป็นจารบุรุษญี่ปุ่น ท่านว่าเวลาที่เขาพาท่านขึ้นรถยนต์ไปโรงพัก ท่านต้องประทับกลางระหว่างนายตำรวจสองคน ซึ่งต่างคนต่างก็มีปืนพกจี้ติดอยู่กับพระองค์ท่านตลอดเวลา ท่านถูกขังอยู่โรงพัก แต่ได้ถูกปล่อยต่อเมื่อได้ติดต่อกับสถานทูตไทยได้สำเร็จ..."

“Somdet Ya Yai” with “Tule Mom A-Ying” and “Tule Mom A-Daeng”

“Somdet Ya Yai, my grandmother’s full elder sister, was then residing at Wang Sra Pathum. She had two surviving children: Somdet Chao Fa Ying Valaya Alongkorn, Princess of Phetchaburi Rajasirindhorn, whom I called Tule Mom A-Ying.
Tule Mom A-Ying normally stayed at Phyathai Palace with my grandmother, and she called my grandmother ‘Mother’, while calling her own true mother ‘Aunt’, which was rather confusing. In truth, this was because the children of Somdet Ya Yai— including Tule Mom Lung Ong Yai (Somdet Phra Boromarajajdhiraj, Crown Prince Maha Vajirunhis) — had mostly passed away at a very young age. So Tule Mom A-Ying came to be raised as my grandmother’s child instead.
When I was little, I remember that Tule Mom A-Ying was both beautiful and elegant. I liked visiting her often. Her private rooms were on the other side of Phyathai Palace. She had a great many illustrated English books, which I loved looking at. As I could not read English, she would translate and explain the pictures for me every time.
Tule Mom A-Ying had only one surviving younger brother, Somdet Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej, Prince of Songkhla (Krom Khun Songkhla Nakharin), whom I called Tule Mom A-Daeng.
Tule Mom A-Daeng received quite an unconventional education. First, he was sent to England to attend Harrow School as a boarding student. After leaving Harrow, instead of continuing his studies in England, he was sent to Germany and entered the naval academy, eventually becoming a naval officer. Just as he began to enjoy life in the German Navy, he had to leave the service because the First World War broke out.
Tule Mom A-Daeng once told me that when the war first started, he was actually arrested — as he was still wearing his German naval officer’s uniform and was suspected of being a Japanese spy. He said that when he was taken away in a car to the police station, he had to sit between two policemen, each pressing a pistol against him the entire time. He was detained at the station but eventually released once he managed to make contact with the Siamese Legation…”
