พอมาถึงหลักฐานสมัยต้นรัตนโกสินทร์ คำว่า “พระพันวรรษา” ไม่ได้ใช้กับกษัตริย์เสียแล้ว แต่มีความหมายถึงตำแหน่ง “พระอัครมเหสี” แทน 

พระราชพงศาวดารกรุงศรีอยุธยา ฉบับพันจันทนุมาศ (เจิม) ซึ่งชำระขึ้นในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช กล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินสมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมโกศว่า “โปรดให้พระพันวรรษาใหญ่ เป็นกรมหลวงอภัยนุชิต โปรดให้พระพันวรรษาน้อยเป็นกรมหลวงพิพิธมนตรี”

ในพระราชพงศาวดารบอกด้วยว่า “พระพันวรรษาพระองค์ใหญ่” เป็นพระมารดาในเจ้าฟ้าธรรมาธิเบศร์ (เจ้าฟ้ากุ้ง) ส่วน “พระพันวรรษาองค์น้อย” เป็นพระราชมารดาในพระเจ้าเอกทัศน์ ดังนั้นตำแหน่งที่พระพันวรรษาในพระราชพงศาวดาร ก็น่าจะหมายความถึงที่ตำแหน่งอัครมเหสี

หรือใน พระราชพงศาวดารกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์รัชกาลที่ 3 ฉบับเจ้าพระยาทิพากรวงศ์ เมื่อกล่าวถึงครั้งสมเด็จพระศรีสุริเยนทราบรมราชินี พระอัครมเหสีในพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย เมื่อคราวสวรรคต ก็ระบุว่า “ครั้นมาถึง ณ วันอังคารเดือน 11 ขึ้น 8 ค่ำเวลาเช้า 4 โมง สมเด็จพระพันวัสสาประชวรพระโรคชราเสด็จสวรรคตในวันนั้น”

In the manuscript known as Kham Hai Kan Chao Krung Kao (คำให้การชาวกรุงเก่า), believed to be based on accounts of Ayutthayan captives taken to Ava during the Konbaung dynasty, a king of Ayutthaya is also recorded with the name “Phra Phan Watsa” (พระพันวรรษา).
